It was in this area a style of yarn recognized worldwide as a "Donegal" was born. The inspiration for this unique yarn has been attributed to the local landscape: - a background of green valleys, brown hills, blue seas and grey skies with the speckled contrasts of the blue and purple of the heathers, the grey rocks and the white sheep on the hills.
Although in existence for centuries, this "Donegal" yarn exploded onto the international market just over a century ago. It gave its name to "Donegal" Tweed, the woven fabric famous for its high quality and the unique texture and colour characteristics of the yarn from which it is produced.
